Manager, St John's Wood

You've been with Majestic quite a while. Why have you stayed so long?

Loads of reasons – but one of the main ones is because of all the opportunities that have come along. For instance, I'm now heavily involved in training and developing new staff which I really enjoy. I help run training courses at Head Office including the manual handling course – I meet everyone who joins the company that way. And of course I also do a lot of on-the-job training day to day. It's really satisfying to know that many of the Assistant Managers and Managers in other stores have worked in my team.

What else keeps you interested?

Well I've been to some amazing places and met loads of people, thanks to some of our suppliers. I have been able to visit a variety of different countries, meeting wine-makers and staying at vineyards. I also still get a real buzz out of making good strong recommendations to customers and getting repeat business as a result. It makes a huge difference to know you're selling something people want, rather than need.

You were in retail before you joined Majestic?

Yes, I did a few different things. I started an arts degree but decided it wasn't for me, so left university and worked as a civil servant for two years. From there I went into retail and sold musical instruments for five years. After that I joined Majestic. What appealed was the opportunity to sell something quite specialised and to work in an environment where you're paid to do what you enjoy. At the time I didn't really have any expectations beyond that, but the more time I spent working with other like-minded, enthusiastic people, the more fulfilling it became.
